Most people don't worry about the pommel of the sword; after all, it's not sharp so how much can it hurt? So when it hits them, right in the face, too, they're left nicely surprised. Traditionally this is done with the hilt (or pommel; go figure) of a sword, but there's no reason it can't be done with any blunt object.
